Ear wax essentially traps dust and dirt particles to keep them from going to ear canal and ear drum. Apart from protecting from dirt, it lubricates the canal. It is mildly acidic and has some mild antibacterial properties. It fights the growth of fungus or bacteria which can cause inflammation.

Ear wax is formed by small glands under the skin of the outer part of the ear canal. Based on the age, the build up changes for different age groups. It is thicker and dry in old age.

I learned from my ENT physician that ear is self cleaning; the wax dries up, flakes and usually falls out or can be genrly wiped away.

If there is lot of accumulation of wax, please do not be tempted to use cotton swabs or other objects. It can potentially affect your hearing. Having an ENT Dr inspect it might be a good idea as he can potentially soften it and can remove it.
