It’s kind of wild to think about how Mendeleev put it together back in 1869. The guy had zero clue about atomic structure. No idea electrons even existed. Yet he still managed to arrange the elements in a way that basically nailed the underlying logic of chemistry. He was just going off atomic weights and how elements behaved, grouping them by their properties. It took over 30 years before J.J. Thomson (the guy who actually discovered the electron) came along, and honestly more like 40+ years before atomic numbers were even recognized as the “real” reason behind the periodic pattern.

What’s funny is that even after all that, Mendeleev himself never fully bought into the idea that electrons come from atoms. He was convinced atoms were indivisible. The word “atom” literally means “can’t be cut,” so the idea of something smaller living inside it just didn’t sit right with him.

But it didn’t matter in the end. His table was so solid that it basically set up 20th century chemistry. Scientists kept discovering new elements that slotted perfectly into the gaps he’d left open, and their weights and properties matched what he’d predicted almost eerily well. As physics and chemistry exploded forward in the early 1900s, all these new discoveries about atomic structure just made sense once you looked at them through the lens of his table.

Basically, one guy with no knowledge of atomic structure built something so fundamentally right that it’s still the backbone of how we understand matter today. That’s a pretty wild legacy for a table of boxes with letters in them.
